Unit Seven

Passage

With free time and no TV, children and adults might rediscover reading. There is more entertainment in a good book than a month of typical TV programming. Mr. Harrison moved to Acero in 1960. He liked the town. It is a city situated by the sea.

如:and, also, likewise, furthermore, moreover, in addition, what is more, for example, for instance等。
如:but, however, otherwise, in spite of, on the contrary, nevertheless等。
如:because, therefore, since, as, for, as a result, consequently等。
如:first, second, third, last, finally, before, after, next, then, in conclusion, accordingly等。

1.答案A。
【关键词语】 fewer people in the shop
【详细解答】 此题关键是听懂句子“One Monday, there were fewer people in the shop than usual when the woman came in, so it was easy for the detective to watch her.”
Shopassitant was her daughter
【详细解答】 只要听懂这一部分“the shopassistant was her daughter.”,并弄清
短文中“she”和“her”的所指,就会明白这里的“her”就是指“the woman’s”,所以答
案选C。
People are not so honest as they once were
一句“People are not so honest as they once were.”

Big Ben, the famous clock which...
【详细解答】 首先需听懂这一部分“one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which...”
5.答案A。

【关键词语】 not only...immense size but...accurate as well
【详细解答】 需听懂这一句“It is not only of immense size but is extremely accurate as well.”特别要听出其中的连接词not only...but...as well,并知道它的意思是
【关键词语】 because microphones...connected...
【详细解答】 关键要听懂句子“On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower.”。

【关键词语】 her daught, Myra; first daught...died

【关键词语】 sure, receive a letter, today was very special day
【详细解答】 文中先提到老太太“was quite sure she would receive a lovely present”。
”之后是“She thought, even if...”,这是一个让步状语从句,表示“即使……也……
”,是插入成分,“After all”真正引导的是这个从句后面的“today was a very special day
【关键词语】 rather than choosing a special gift
【详细解答】 However起转折作用,表示与期待的相反,又有“rather than”引导“choosing a special gift”,表示对这一部分内容的否定,所肯定的是后面的内容“Myra had
simply sent her a cheque folded in a card.”。
10.答案A。
【关键词语】 ...old lady found...disappointment...

13.答案D。

【关键词语】 a young movie actress
The letter was addressed to Jody Foster, a young movie

Life was hard...brutal
Life was hard and often brutal.”

1
People are not so honest as they once were. The temptation to steal is greater
than ever before-especially in large shops. A detective recently watched a welldressed woman who always went into a large store on Monday mornings. One Monday, there were fewer people in the shop than usual when the woman came in, so it
was easier for the detective to watch her. The woman first bought a few small articles. After a little time, she chose one of the most expensive dresses in the
shop and handed it to an assistant who wrapped it up for her as quickly as possible. Then the woman simply took the parcel and walked out of the shop without paying. When she was arrested, the detective found out that the shopassistant was her daughter. The girl “gave” her mother a free dress once a week!

Qusetions 1 to 3 are based on the passage you have just heard.
1. Why was it easier for the detective to watch the woman one Monday?
2. Who was the shopassistant?
3. What’s the author’s opinion about “honesty”?

2
When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C.. If the Houses of
Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but of extremely accurate as well. Officials from
Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C., you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected
to the clock tower. Big Ben hasrarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of
paint on one of the hands and slowed it down!

Qusetions 4 to 6 are based on the passage you have just heard.
4. What is Big Ben?
5. What does the author think of Big Ben?
6. Why can you hear the clock on the B.B.C.?

3
On the occasion of the old lady’s eightieth birthday, she waited eagerly to see what kind of present her daughter, Myra, would send to her. Since her first daughter, Enid, died two years ago, the old lady had endured the loneliness
of living by herself. It was rare for Myra to visit her mother, but still the old lady was proud of her. She felt sure that her daughter would celebrate her birthday with something special. As she waited for the postman, the old lady trembled with excitement because she was quite sure she would receive a lovely present. After all, she thought, even if Myra paid little attention to her mother at other times, today was a very special day. However, when the postman came, the old lady found to her disappointment that, rather than choosing a special gift, Myra had simply sent her a cheque folded in a card.

Qusetions 7 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.
7. What’s the relationship between Myra and the old lady?
8. Why was the old lady sure she would receive a lovely present?
9. What was the old lady’s present?10. How did the old lady feel when
she found her present?

In March of 1981, John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate ed States President Ronald Reagan. President Reagan was coming out of a hotel after making a
speech when suddenly six loud shots ran out. One of the bullets entered the president’s left lung. His security men rushed him to the hospital where doctors operated on him for twohours. Reagan recovered rapidly and was back in the White
House after a few weeks.
The gunman was a young man from a welltodo family. After the shooting, the
police searched his motel room and found a letter. The letter was addressed to
Jody Foster, a young movie actress. In the letter he explained that he wanted to shoot the President in order to impress Miss Foster and make her pay attention
to him. The police later discovered that Hinckley had a history of emotional problems.

Qusetions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.
11. What had happened to Ronald Reagan in March of 1981?
12. What was Reagan doing when the thing happened?
13. Who was Jody Foster?

5
If you had been alive 200 years ago, and perhaps had stolen only a few loaves of bread, you would have been sent to prison. If you had killed someone, something
far worse would have happened to you. You would have been hanged in public. Life was hard and often brutal. So was the law. Perhaps it had to be. If you had lived in a large city like London, and if you had walked through the streets at night, someone might have killed you only in order to get your money.
Prisons have of course gotten much better in the last 200 years. But conditions
are still far from perfect. If you were in a prison in many countries, you would
probably be living in a small cell. You would probably be sharing it with at least two other people. Many people say, “Why should criminals have any better conditions? They shouldn’t have broken the law in the first place.”

Qusetions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.
14. What was life like 200 years ago?
15. What was the law like 200 years ago?
16. What does the author think of the conditions of prisons in the last
200 years?

6
If we didn’t eat, we couldn’t keep our bodies alive. We couldn’t grow; we couldn’t have energy; and various parts of our body couldn’t function as they must.
Modern scientists have been able to find out which substances in food our bodies
need, and how much of these substances we need to be healthy. In other words, it isn’t enough just to eat; we must take in enough of each type of food substance for a specific purpose.
Protein food such as milk, eggs, cheese, meat and fish contain large quantities of the kind of material the body needs to build cells. The body cannot make new cells without protein. Carbohydrates are foods which have a large quantity of starch or sugar, such as potatoes, flour, rice, and sugar. They are important to
the body because they keep it warm and give it energy. Almost all foods also have some fat, and fat is the most concentrated energygiving food the body needs.

Qusetions 17 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.
17. What should we do if we want to keep our bodies alive?
18. What is necessary for the body to make new cells?
19. What kind of food does flour belong to?
20. Why are carbohydrates important to the body?
