1. Am I eligible for MPhil/PhD admission?
Applicants seeking admission to a research degree programme should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirement:
MPhil: - a relevant bachelor's degree with honors (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university.
PhD: - a relevant bachelor's degree with honors and a Master's degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university; or
- a relevant bachelor's degree with first class honors (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university.
In addition, certain degree courses have more specific requirements. Qualifying examinations to test the applicants' abilities to follow the prescribed courses and/or interviews may be conducted. Applicants with qualifications other than an honors degree are considered on their individual merits.
2. When is the deadline for application? How do I obtain the application materials?
Applications for the research degrees of MPhil and PhD will be invited in late 2003 and in mid-2004 with closing dates of 31 January 2004 (main round) and 31 May 2004 (1st clearing round) respectively. There may be a 2nd clearing round for the January 2005 intake, and the deadline will be on 30 September 2004.

3. Does the University require applicants to take English language tests?
Applicants from a university where the language of instruction and examination is NOT entirely in English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Faculties.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (taken within a two-year period) (University's code: 9671)
All Faculties: A paper-based score of 550 (or computer-based score of 213) or above
Arts Faculty: In addition to the above requirement, a score of 4 or above in the Test of Written English (TWE), unless candidates are seeking admission to the Department of Chinese
Please use "99" as the department code for sending the official score report to the HKU Graduate School.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (taken within a two-year period)
All Faculties: Band 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5
Arts Faculty: Band 7 with no subtest lower than 5.5
Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE)
International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)
Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language (CPE)
All Faculties: Grade C or above
4. Do I need to submit a GMAT/GRE score report?
Only those applying for admission to the MPhil/PhD programmes in the School of Business are required to send the official score report of GRE or GMAT, taken within five years.
Those applying for admission to the MPhil/PhD programmes in the Department of Psychology whose first degree is not in Psychology are required to send the official score report of GRE Subject Test in Psychology, taken within five years.
5. How much is the application fee and how should I pay for it?
The application fee for each postgraduate curriculum is HK$150 (non-refundable). Payment by cash will NOT be accepted.
Acceptable methods of payment:
(i) Local applicants residing in Hong Kong:
Please pay the application fee to The University of Hong Kong's account (Account No. 002-222834-014 (Ref: 4001)) with the HSBC by either:
(a) using the HSBC's Account Deposit Form. Fill in the Account Number with Ref. and the amount of HK$150 and pay at any branch of the HSBC; or
(b) using the ETC machine to transfer the exact amount into the University of Hong Kong's bank account.
The original customer copy of the Account Deposit Form or the ETC transaction advice must be stapled together with your application.
You are also reminded to retain a photocopy of the customer copy of the Account Deposit Form or the ETC transaction advice as your proof of payment of application fee.
(ii) Overseas applicants not residing in Hong Kong:
Please pay the application fee by either:
(a) a Hong Kong dollar bank draft (HK$150) drawn on a bank in Hong Kong and made payable to "The University of Hong Kong"; or
(b) a US dollar bank draft (USD20) made payable to "The University of Hong Kong".
Please write your full name and proposed department of study at the back of the customer copy of the Account Deposit Form / ETC transaction advice / bank draft for identification purpose.
If you would like to apply through the online application system, you should pay the application fee of HK$150 by VISA or MASTERCARD. Please refer to the instructions provided in the online application system for details.
6. How much is the tuition fee?
For the 2003/2004 academic year, the tuition fees are as follows:
Full-time MPhil/PhD programme: HK$42,100 (per annum)
Part-time MPhil/PhD programme: HK$28,070 (per annum)
(HK$7.8=US$1.0)
7. What is the amount of postgraduate studentship? Am I eligible for this award?
The basic stipend amount for 2003/2004 is HK$13,000* per month and the studentship holder may be required to undertake duties which carry educational benefits for the holder for a maximum of 100 hours in each year. A higher rate may be payable, at the discretion of the department in which the studentship holder is registered. In return, the studentship holder may be required to work additional hours, up to a maximum of a further 150 hours per year.
Postgraduate studentships shall normally be awarded to:
(i) Full-time MPhil students who hold a Bachelor's degree at second class honors upper division or above from this university, and
(ii) Full-time PhD students who hold a Bachelor's degree at second class honors upper division or above and a master's degree; or a Bachelor's degree at first class honors from this university.
Other qualifications of equivalent standard from this university or from another recognized university or comparable institution may be accepted as determined by the Board of Graduate Studies.
