They have helped to check people's temperatures and carry out disinfection in public places. They also helped to educate the public about SARS by distributing brochures and giving lectures.
A number of students from medical colleges have joined some disease prevention and control centers to answer people's enquiries.
*** The United Nations Children's Fund or UNICEF has donated 15 cars to China to support the country's anti-SARS campaign.
At the handover ceremony, UNICEF representative to China Christian Voumard spoke highly of China's efforts and measures taken against the disease.
The cars will be immediately put into use in Shanxi province and Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, both of which have been seriously hit by SARS.
*** China has afforested a total area of 1.4 million hectares over the past two years, with another 13 million hectares of land reclaimed from desertification.
The achievements come from a large afforestation project covering northern, northeastern and northwestern China. The project aims to form a shelter forest covering ten provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
China plans to invest another 400 million yuan, or more than 48 million US dollars in afforestation in these areas this year.
*** The telephone and internet have become the major tools in China's second round of graduate examinations, which started Monday.
Teachers will interview the examinees on telephone or the net, and a recording of the telephone interview will be made to prevent any possibility of fraud.
Anyone found to have acted dishonestly during the instant interviews will be denied admission.
About 100 thousand students will be attending this round of examinations nationwide.
