The trial operation of the first power generating unit of China's Three Gorges Project has been completed successfully, beginning generating power for power grids.
The generating unit, known as the No.2 unit, will start a 30-day period of power generation for the grids before commencement of commercial production.
The successful trial operation came after failed attempt in the first trial operation, which began on July 1 and lasted about 68 hours, falling short of the 72 hours required.
The unit, built by a consortium of Hewitt, Siemens and General Electric, has a generating capacity 700,000 kilowatts.
Meanwhile, experimental operation of the No. 5 unit began on July 7, and engineers are installing four other units.
A total of 26 generating units will be installed before the project is completed in 2009. ***
China's Central Government has allocated a total of 800 million yuan, or about 97 million US dollars for local flood control work.
The funds are being used mainly for the reconstruction of flood control facilities, population relocation, and costs of improving sanitation and epidemic control.

Overseas experts coming to China now work in all of China's economic sectors such as industry, agriculture, science and technology and commerce. Their destinations are no longer restricted to the coastal regions.
Previously, they worked mainly in the production, education, media and publication sectors.

Macao's total export value almost reached 900 million US dollars for the first five months of this year, a 9.8 percent increase compared with that of the same period last year.
The United States and the European Union are its main export markets with 80 percent of its exports are textile and garment products.
Meanwhile, over half of Macao's imports come from the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong.
