有人认为现代科技的发展污染了环境,消耗了能源,你是怎么认为的?
For: acid rain, foul air, chemicals in the smoke from powerstations Science has been responsible for pollution. Modern industry, as well as modern traffic conveniences, has created a serious problem of air pollution. The “green house effect” is now threatening the existence of mankind. With the development of technology and the increase of the population, the amount and range of materials taken has increased. It is estimated that this trend will continue in the years to come. However, natural resources are not inexhaustible. Some resources are already nearly used up. For example, the end of the world’s fuel is already within sight. Such an essential daily item as water is in short supply in many parts of the world. Energy crisis will threaten our existence because of the people’s extravagance and the rapid growth of the population. It is imperative that we investigate and develop new sources of energy immediately. With the expansion of industrialization, requirement for energy all over the world is on the rise. We have a great need for energy because of the rapid growth of our economy. These rich energy resources are being used up rapidly. To avoid crisis in the future, we should take some actions. The overuse of energy has influenced ecological balance. The development of modern life is placing an ever increasing demand for electricity. If there were no energy, our world would be in a state of confusion. The transportation systems that benefit mankind also create pollution and use up valuable energy resources. While we cannot do without transportation these days, we cannot ignore the fact that it has an adverse effect on the planet. Such a rapid development produces more and more waste, which goes into the water, the soil and the air. Some of it is made harmless. However, where there is too much of it, the poisonous waste may do great harm to the things around the people. Air pollution comes from factories, power stations and cars. Chemicals in the smoke from power stations cause a lot of damage. They can travel hundreds of miles in the wind before falling to the ground in the rain. But this “chemical rain” gradually destroys trees in the forests and kills fish in the lakes. In Germany, over 50% of the country's trees had been damaged by the year 1986. China’s extraordinary growth has put the same kind of pressures on the environment, and the costs of growth are rising right along with the prosperity. Polluted air and water are threatening the remarkable progress. Smog has caused entire Chinese cities to disappear from satellite photographs. And respiratory illness is China’s number one health problem. Water pollution is caused by waste from factories and cities. Oceans are able to clean themselves, but certain seas, once they become dirty, are not able to do so.
Against: An interesting fact about technology is that it can both hurt the environment and be our best hope for preventing or repairing such damage. Techno1ogical progress is not the enemy of the environment but is perhaps its best friend, since it allows us to reduce humanity's footprint on the natural world. High-tech agriculture boosts farm productivity, which means a cheaper food supply and more land spared for nature. Better sewage treatment means that our rivers and stream can run free of pollutants. Catalytic converters on the cars and better filters on power-plant smoke-stacks have greatly reduced smog, smoke and soot in the air.
