Upon this model I shall begin my task tomorrow, and in a year expect to tower into the air beyond the malice or pursuit of man. But I will work only on this condition, that the art shall not be divulged, and that you shall not require me to make wings for any but ourselves.” “Why,” said Rasselas.“ should you envy others so great an advantage? All skill ought to be exerted for universal good; every man has owed much to others, and ought to repay the kindness that he has received.” “If men were all virtuous,” returned the artist. “I should with great alacrity teach them all to fly. But, what would be the security of the good, if the bad could at pleasure invade them from the sky? Against an army sailing through the clouds neither wall, nor mountains, nor seas, could afford any security. A flight of northern savages might hover in the wind, and light at once with irresistible violence upon the capital of a fruitful region that was rolling under them. Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: From 1841 until 1867, the year in which the transcontinental railroad was completed, nearly 350,000 North Americans emigrated to the Pacific coast along the western wagon road known variously as the Oregon, the California, or simply the Overland Trail. This migration was essentially a family phenomenon. The contention that “the family was the one substantial social institution” on the frontier is too sweeping, yet it is undeniable that the white family largely mediated the incorporation of the western territories into the American nation. For every member of the family, the west trip was exhausting, toilsome, and often grueling. Each year in late spring, westbound emigrants gathered for the journey at spots along the Missouri River and moved out in parties of ten to several hundred wagons. Aggregates of nuclear families, loosely attached by kinship or friendship, traveled together or joined an even larger caravan. Coastbound families traveled by oxdrawn wagons at the frustratingly slow pace of fifteen to twenty miles per day. They worked their way up the Platt River valley where the route was relatively easy going; but from where the roads to California and Oregon diverged, to their final destinations, the pioneers faced disastrous conditions: scorching deserts, boggy sand flats, and rugged mountains. 26. It is implied in the passage that after 1867, the Overland Trail was no longer used so frequently because by then ____. A) 350,000 people had emigrated to the Pacific coast B) the emigrants started using a different route C) it was easier to go by railroad D) the condition of the Trail had deteriorated badly 27. What was the importance of the families in this migration west? A) They were instrumental in the west joining the rest of America. B) They established societies in the Western regions. C) They formed the American nation. D) They populated the frontier. 28. According to the passage the migrants ____. A) were tired when they started their journey B) traveled in closely knit groups C) started their journey at roughly the same time each year D) followed the route of the Missouri River 29. The most difficult part of the journey was ____. A) up the plat River valley B) after the roads forked to Oregon and California C) along the Missouri River D) along the Pacific Coast Road 30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A) The Great Migration West B) The Coming of the Transcontinental Railroad C) The American Nation D) Travel in 19th Century America
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: In the United States, a person’s status or success in life is often measured by individual accomplishment as a result of individual effort. The status or prestige of the group that the individual belongs to or the company the individual works for is much less important than individual effort and success in spite of difficult circumstances. This is a story about the “American Dream” and a woman who came to the United States at the age of twentytwo to achieve it.Margaret Jaffe arrived in California from Scotland in 1964 when she was just twentytwo years old. She quickly used to American ways. She got herself a secretarial job, a small apartment, a used American car, and finally a husband, Michael. She quit her job when her son David was born in 1973.David was the inspiration. Margaret needed to start her own business. It all began when she put baby David into an infant seat and noticed how hot and sweaty and restless he became in the plastic pad that covered the infant seat. To make him feel more comfortable, she sewed a pretty flowered slipcover and filled it with soft cotton. She put it over the plastic pad on the infant seat. It was an immediate success with the baby, and Margaret said to her husband, “This will sell. There is a market for it.”Margaret quickly sewed five more seat covers and took them to a buyer at a large department store in Los Angeles. She got an order for 144 of the flowered cotton covers and was given only one week to fill it. Then Margaret took her seat covers to other local department and specialty stores, and before long, she had more orders than she could sew herself. So she drew patterns and cut pieces at home and then gave them to other housewives who sewed the finished product. By the end of 1974, just one year later, she had sold about $10,000 worth of infant seat covers at around $3 each.By 1978, Margaret had added comforters, sheets, and zippered suits for babies to her product line and was making around $30,000 per year. Then states began to pass laws requiring all children under the age of four to ride in special car seats when they are in an automobile. It was good luck for Margaret Jaffe, who began receiving orders for her pretty flowered seat covers to use on the plastic car seats. Margaret’s husband, Michael, became a salesman for her products, and Margaret herself concentrated on management and production. The Jaffes moved from California to Virginia so they could be closer to the manufacturers of the cotton material Margaret needed, and they formed their own company, Bonny Bunting. At age forty two, Margaret Jaffe now owns a factory of her own, and her business sales are over $3 million a year. In 1982, the Jaffes took a combined salary of $100,000 from their business. 31. Why did the Jaffes move to Virginia? A) In order to be closer to the factory they bought. B) Because there were more sales of their products there. C) Because Margaret’s husband got a job as a salesman there. D) Because they wanted to be closer to the manufacturers of the fabrics Margaret used. 34. In the United States, a person’s status is often measured by ____. A) his or her personal achievements B) the status or prestige of the group the individual belongs to C) the status or prestige of the company the person work for D) the person’s origin 35. C) It shows how success is best achieved through individual effort.
D) It shows that even women who are also wives and mothers can be successful in business in America.
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: More attention was paid to the quality of production in France at the time of Rene Coty. Charles Deschanel was then the financial minister. He stressed that wor kmanship and quality were more important than quantity for industrial production. It would be necessary to produce quality goods for the international market to complete with those produced in other countries. The French economy needed a larger share of the international market to balance its import and export trade. French industrial and agricultural production was still inadequate to meet the immediate needs of the people, let alone longranged developments. Essential imports had stretched the national credit to the breaking point. Rents were tightly controlled, but the extreme inflation affected general population most severely through the cost of food. Food costs took as much as 80 per cent of workers income. Wages, it is true, had risen and there was fulltime and overtime employment. Taken together these factors enabled the working class to exist but allowed them no sense of security. In this precarious and discouraging situation, workmen were willing to work overseas for higher wages. The government was reluctant to let workers leave the country. It was feared this migration of workers would deplete the labor force. The lack of qualified workers might hinder the improvement in the quality of industrial products produced. Qualified workers produced in foreign countries. Also the quantity of quality goods produced in France would not be able to increase as part of its qualified labor force moved to other countries. 36. According the passage, the French workers were ____. A) better paid than the workers in any other European country B) able to save more money with the increase in his wages C) anxious to work abroad D) often unable to find work in France 37. Part Ⅳ Short Answer Questions Directions:In this part there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words (not exceeding 10 words).
George Washington Carver showed that plant life was more than just food for animals and humans. Carver’s first step was to analyze plant parts to find out what they were made of. He then combined these simpler isolated substances with other substances to create new products. The branch of chemistry that studies and finds ways to use raw materials from farm products to make industrial products is called chemurgy. Carver was one of the first and greatest chemurgists of all time. Today the science of chemurgy is better known as the science of synthetics. Each day people depend on and use synthetic materials made from raw materials. All his life Carver battled against the disposal of waste materials, and warned of the growing need to develop substitutes for the natural substances being used up by humans. Carver never cared about getting credit for the new products he created. He never tried to patent his discoveries or get wealthy from them. He turned down many offers to leave Tuskegee Institute to become a rich scientist in private industry. Thomas Edison, inventor of the electric light, offered him a laboratory in Detroit to carry out food research. When the United States government made him a collaborator in the Mycology and Plant Disease Survey of the Department of Agriculture, he accepted the position with the understanding that he wouldn’t have to leave Tuskegee. An authority on plant diseases—especially of the fungus variety—Carver sent hundreds of specimens to the United States Department of Agriculture. At the peak of his career, Carver’s fame and influence were known on every continent. 71. 21.答案A。 …every man has owed much to others, and ought to repay the kindess that he has repayed(每个人都欠别人很多,而且都应对他收到的善待回报之)。 【详细解答】A.a tailor裁缝。 B.a gambler打赌者。
如:“ If men were all virtuous, I should with great alacrity teach them all to fly. But what would be the security of the good, if the bad could at pleasure invade them from the sky?(如果人们都是善良的,那么我就非常乐意教他们都飞起来。 27.答案A。 …yet it is undeniable that the white family largely mediated the incorporation of the western territories into the American nation(… Each year in late spring west bound emigrants gathered for the journey…(每年晚春时节,西行的移民们便聚集起 来准备起程…)。 A.up the Patt River Valley这段路程是relatively easy going(相当好走),不符合题意。C.along the Missouri River,这段路程也较好走,因为moved out in parties of ten to several hundred wagons(沿着这条河出发的队伍由十到数百辆大车组成),可想而知,如果路途不好走,就不会有数百辆大车在运动,故也不可取。 B的说法是符题意的,因为它可以在短文的最后一句话里体现来:the pioneers faced disastrous conditions: scorching deserts, boggy and flats, and rugged mountains (开拓者而临的是灾难性的环境:灼热的沙漠,无限的沼泽,沙洲和崎岖不平的山路),由此可知,到California to Oregon的叉路是多么的艰苦卓绝了。 30.答案A。

It was good luck for Margaret Jaffe, who began receiving orders for her pretty flowered seat covers to use on the plastic car scats. 34.答案A。 In the United States, a person’s status or success in life is often measured by individual personal accomplishment as a result of individual.(在美国个人一生的地位或成功往往是由个人的努力所取得的成就来衡量的)。

Wolves hunt in packs by instinct(狼的本能是以群体进行捕猎)。 【详细解答】resolve意为“解决,解答”,如resolve a contradiction (解决矛盾);resolve a question (or problem)等;resign意为“辞职, 放弃”等,exert意为“尽力,发挥,施加(压力)等”;resort意为“诉诸,采取(某种手段)”等,和to连用,D为本题答案。 64.答案A。 三个词的习惯搭配分别中是:confine…to+名词;decrease…to+名词;restrain…from… 69.答案A。 【详细解答】hung up和hung back为一类,cut down 与cut off为一类。
The work and career of George Washington Carver or Carver’s work and career. 72.【参考答案】replace natural substances being used up by humans 【解题技巧】通过阅读原文从字行里找答案。 如果用take the place of就多出二个单词,会被扣分。 73.【参考答案】development of industrial products from farm products 【解题技巧】要对关键词chemurgy进行英语释义。 如第二段开头一句话就是对这一词汇的解释:raw materials from farm products to make industrial products或develop ment of industrial products from farm products。 To illustrate (show) one of Carver’s many opportunities 【解题技巧】需要对作者意图进行理解和对上下文进行间接推理。 Recycling of used materials or To reuse the used materials 【解题技巧】通过上下文找出答案。
Sample Writing Health Nothing is more valuable to man than his health. It is clear that good health is the foundation of happiness. If a man is sick most of his life, he can hardly be said to be a happy one. He may be always depressed and perhaps pessimistic. Illness may deprive him of confidence, vigor andchances to enjoy the world.Health is also the foundation of one’s success. Sickness may make it impossible for a man to pursue his career effectively. On the other hand if one is in good health he can go all out to overcome the obstacles on his way to success. In order to maintain and build up our health, we should exercise every day to strengthen our muscles. We should also keep good hours. Get up early, we can take breath of the fresh morning air which helps us a lot. As the old saying goes: Early to rise and early to go to bed makes one happy and healthy. It is equally important to remember the proverb “Prevention is better than cure.”If we pay attention to our health, we can reduce the chances of getting sick. Health is more important than wealth. Those who are rich but lose their health are no more fortunate than those who are poor. If you want your dreams to come true, please be sure that health is the most important part of your success.
