Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:
The word religion is derived from the Latin now religion, which denotes both earnest observance of ritual obligations and an inward spirit of reverence. In modern usage, religion covers a wide spectrum of meanings that reflect the enormous variety of ways the term can be interpreted. At one extreme, many committed believers recognize only their own tradition as a religion, understanding expressions such as worship and prayer to refer exclusively to the practices of their tradition. Although many believers stop short of claiming an exclusive status for their tradition, they may nevertheless use vague or idealizing terms in defining religion, for example, true love of God, or the path of enlightenment. At the other extreme, religion may be equated with ignorance, fanaticism, or wishful thinking. By defining religion as a sacred engagement with what is taken to be a spiritual reality, it is possible to consider the importance of religion in human life without making claims about what it really is or ought to be. Religion is not an object with a single, fixed meaning, or even a zone with clear boundaries. It is an aspect of human experience that may intersect, incorporate, or transcend other aspects of life and society. Such a definition avoids the drawbacks of limiting the investigation of religion to western or biblical categories such as monotheism (belief in one god only) or to church structure, which are not universal. For example, in tribal societies, religion unlike the Christian church usually is not a separate institution but pervades the whole of public and private life. In Buddhism, gods are not as central as the idea of a Buddha. In many traditional cultures, the idea of a sacred cosmic order is the most prominent religious belief. Because of this variety, some scholars prefer to use a general term such as the sacred to designate the common foundation of religious life. Religion in this understanding includes a complex of activities that cannot be reduced to any single aspect of human experience. It is a part of individual life but also of group dynamics. Religion includes patterns of behavior but also patterns of language and thought. It is sometimes a highly organized institution that sets itself apart from a culture, and it is sometimes an integral part of a culture. Religious experience may be expressed in visual symbols, dance and performance, elaborate philosophical systems, legendary and imaginative stories, formal ceremonies, and detailed rules of ethical conduct and law. Each of these elements assumes innumerable cultural forms. In some ways there are as many forms of religious expression as there are human cultural environments. 21. What is the passage mainly concerned about? A) Religion has a variety of interpretation. B) Religion is a reflection of ignorance. C) Religion is not only confined to the Christian categories. D) Religion includes all kinds of activities. 22. What does the word “observance” probably mean in Line 2? A) Notice. B) Watching. C) Conformity. D) Experience. 23. According to the passage what people generally consider religion to be? A) Fantastic observance. B) Spiritual practice. C) Individual observance of tradition. D) A complex of activities. 24. Which of the following is NOT true? A) It is believed by some that religion should be what it ought to be. B) “The path of enlightment” is a definition that the author doesn’t agree to. C) According to the author, the committed believers define religion improperly. D) The author doesn’t speak in favor of the definition of “the sacred”. 25. Which of the following is religion according to the passage? A) Performance of human beings. B) Buddha, monotheism and some tribal tradition. C) Practice separated from culture. D) All the above. Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together.Others say that the opposite is true, that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests. One country received its secondplace medals with visible indignation after the hockey(曲棍球) final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decision. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said,“This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.”The president of the federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team for at least three years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive their silver medals. Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in nonnational teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism. 26. According to the author, the recent Olympic Games have ____. A) created goodwill between the nations B) bred only false national pride C) barely showed any international friendship D) led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred 27. What did the manager mean by saying, “…Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”? A) His team would no longer take part in international games. B) Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decision. C) There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation. D) The Federation should be dissolved. 28. The basketball example implied that ____. A) too much patriotism was displayed in the incident B) the announcement to prolong the match was wrong C) the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision D) the American team was right in rejecting their silver medals 29. The author gives the two examples in paragraphs 2 and 3 to show ____. A) how false national pride led to undesirable incidents in international games B) those sportsmen have been more obedient than they used to be C) that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendship D) those unfair decisions are common in the Olympic Games 30. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage? A) The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved. B) Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games. C) Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game. D) International contests are liable for misunderstanding between nations.
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: Exceptional children are different in some significant ways from others of the same age. For these children to develop to their full adult potential, their education must be adapted to those differences. Although we focus on the needs of exceptional children, we find ourselves describing their environment as well. While the leading actor on the stage capturesour attention, we are aware of the importance of the supporting players and the scenery of the play itself. Both the family and the society in which exceptional children live are often the key to their growth and development. And it is in the public schools that we find the full expression of society’s understanding—the knowledge, hopes, and fears that are passed on to the next generation. Education in any society is a mirror of that society. In that mirror we can see the strengths, the weaknesses, the hopes, the prejudices, and the central values of the culture itself. The great interest in exceptional children shown in public education over the past three decades indicates the strong feeling in our society that all citizens, whatever their special conditions, deserve the opportunity to fully develop their capabilities. “All men are created equal.” We’ve heard it many times, but it still has important meaning for education in a democratic society. Although the phrase was used by this country’s founders to denote equality before the law, it has also been interpreted to mean equality of opportunity. That concept implies educational opportunity for all children—the right of each child to receive help in learning to the limits of his or her capacity, whether that capacity be small or great. Recent court decisions have confirmed the right of all children—disabled or no t—to an appropriate education, and have ordered that public schools take the necessary steps to provide that education. In response, schools are modifying their programs, adapting instruction to children who are exceptional, to those who can not profit substantially from regular programes. 31. In Paragraph 2, the author cites the example of the leading actor on t he stage to show that ____. A) the growth of exceptional children has much to do with their family and the society B) exceptional children are more influenced by their families than normal children are C) exceptional children are the key interest of the family and society D) the needs of the society weigh much heavier than the needs of the exceptional children 32. The reason that the exceptional children receive so much concern in education is that ____.
A) they are expected to be leaders of the society B) they might become a burden of the society C) they should fully develop their potentials D) disabled children deserve special consideration 33. This passage mainly deals with ____. A) the differences of children in their learning capabilities B) the definition of exceptional children in modern society C) the special educational programs for exceptional children D) the necessity of adapting education to exceptional children 34. From its passage we learn that the educational concern for exceptional children ____. A) is now enjoying legal support B) disagrees with the tradition of the country C) was clearly stated by the country’s founders D) will exert great influence over court decisions 35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A) Exceptional children refer to those with mental or physical problems. B) The author use “All men are created equal” to counter the school program for the exceptional children. C) Recent court decisions confirm the rights of the exceptional children to enjoy the equal rights to learn with the normal ones. D) Regular school programs fail to meet the requirements to develop the potential of exceptional children.
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: Federal Reserve System, central banking system of the United States,is popularly called the Fed. A central bank serves as the banker to both the banking community and the government; it also issues the national currency, conducts monetary policy, and plays a major role in the supervision and regulation of banks and bankholding companies. In the U.S. these functions are the responsibilities of key officials of the Federal Reserve System: the Board of Governors, located in Washington, D.C., and the top officers of the 12 district Federal Reserve banks, located throughout the nation. The Fed’s actions, described below, generally have a significant effect on the U.S. interest rates and, subsequently, on stock, bond,
and other financial markets. The Federal Reserve’s basic powers are concentrated in the Board of Governors, which is paramount in all policy issues concerning bank regulation and supervision and in most aspects of monetary control. The board enunciates the Fed’s policies on both monetary and banking matters. Because the board is not an operating agency, most of the daytoday implementation of policy decisions is left to the district Federal Reserve banks, stock in which is owned by the commercial banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. Ownership in this instance, however, does not imply control; the Board of Governors and the heads of the reserve banks orient their policies to the public interest rather than to the benefit of the private banking system. The U.S. banking system’s regulatory apparatus is complex; the authority of the Federal Reserve is shared in some instances for example, in mergers or the examination of banks with other federal agencies, such as the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). In the critical area of regulating the nation’s money supply in accordance with national economic goals, however, the Federal Reserve is independent within the government.Income and expenditures of the Federal Reserve banks and of the Board of Governors are not subject to the congressional appropriation process; the Federal Reserve is self- financing. Its income ($20.2 billion in 1992) comes mainly from reserve bank hol dings of income-earning securities, primarily those of the U.S. government. Outlays ($1.5 billion in 1992) are mostly for operational expenses in providing services to the government and for expenditures connected with regulation and monetary policy. In 1992 the Federal Reserve returned $16.8 billion in earnings to the U.S. Treasury. 36. The Fed of the United States ____. A) functions as China Bank B) is the counterpart of People’s Bank of China C) is subjected to the banking community and government D) has 13 top officers who can influence the American financial market 37. The fact that stock in the Fed belongs to commercial banks ____. A) doesn’t mean the latter is in control B) means the latter is in control C) means the latter is subjected to the reserve banks D) means the reserve banks orient the latter’s policies 38. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A) The Fed is a very big, complex and significant system which comprises m any local banks. B) All the commercial banks are not the components of Federal Reserve System. C) Board of Governors is the supreme policymakers of America. D) District Reserve banks rather than Board of Governors perform the day today policies. 39. The authority of the Federal Reserve ____. A) has to be shared with other establishments B) is exclusive at other times C) isn’t limited by comptroller of the Currency and FDIC D) is limited by Board of Governors 40. Income of the Board of Governors ____. A) is borrowed from the U.S. Treasury B) is used by the government to make various policies C) comes from the U.S. Treasury D) is not granted by the government

Part Ⅳ Short Answer Questions Directions:In this part there is a short passage with five questions. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions in the fewest possible words. Betta, also known as the Siamese fighting fish, common name of a small freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. Cultivated bettas may be of any color but most commonly are red, blue, or turquoise. The color in males becomes more vivid when the fish is courting or otherwise aroused. The adult measures 3. 8 to 6. 4 cm ( 1. 5 to 2. 5 in.) in length. Like several related species, including the gourami and climbing perch, the betta does not obtain its entire oxygen supply from water but must periodically rise to the surface for air. A cavity above each gill chamber contains a special organ, the labyrinth, used in breathing air. It enables the fish to inhabit oxygen—deficient water that could not be tolerated otherwise. The male builds a nest for the eggs by blowing sticky bubbles of air that collect as a froth at the water’s surface. The male fertilizes into this froth and also briefly guards the hatched young. Male fighting fish are bred in Thailand for the purpose of competitive combat, and people gamble on the outcome of the matches. Male bettas are aggressive and even attack their own reflections in a mirror. Fights between male bettas are begun by placing two evenly matched fish in adjacent glass containers. When the fish make attempts at attacking each other, they are removed from the separate containers and placed in a single larger container. When they have recovered from being transferred, they take up a sidebyside position and begin a long series of swift attacking movements. Because their teeth are small, they nibble rather than bite, concentrating their attacks on the fins. Fights are sometimes interrupted while the fish swim to the surface to replenish their supply of oxygen. Although injuries to fins and scales sustained during battle are usually extensive, fighting fish generally recover completely in a few weeks. 1. In what case do bettas assume various colors? ________________________________________-. 2. How does the betta breath air? ____________________________________. 3. What does the word “otherwise” mean here in line 11? _______________________________________-. 4. For what are bettas cultivated in Thailand? _________________________________________________. 5. At what moment does a fight between male bettas start? ________________________________________________-.

21. 答案A。 【详细解答】文章第二句(…religion covers a wide spectrum of meanings…) …what is taken to be a spiritual reality(被看作是精神现实的东西)中谓语是被动结构,动作执行者是泛指的“人们people”,在被动结构中省略了。 文章最后一段中的“It is sometimes…that sets itself apart from culture”已有明确说明。
26. 答案C。 【详细解答】根据短文的第一段可以排除A(增强了国家间的友谊)和B(产 生错误 的民族自豪感)。 C项的“几乎没表现出国家友谊”, 与第一段文字中的…the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourages international brotherhood意义相同。 27. 28. 答案A。 30. 答案A。
31. 答案A。 The great interest in exceptional children shown in public education over…indicated the strong feeling… all citizen,…deserve the opportunity to fully develop their capabilities。 33. 34. 答案A。 【详细解答】答案A的根据是第四段中间的“Recent court decisions have confirmed the right of all children—disabled or not—to an appropriate education. 【详细解答】文章首段第二句中的…to develop their full adult potential和文章最 后一句中的…to those who cannot profit substantially from regular programs清楚地表明了exceptional children指智力超常的儿童,因此,A)项(身体和智力有毛病)不正确。
其权力主要集中在the Board of Governors之手。 根据文章开头部分的“A central bank…issues the national currency, conducts monetary policy, …“(中央银行…… A)作用同中国银行;C)与原文第二句“A central bank serves…” 37. 答案A。 表面上看,C(意味着商业银行从属于联邦储备银行)和D(意味着储备银行左右着商 业银行的政策)是正确的,而且原文中可找到根据,但C、D与题干毫无逻辑联系。 第三段中间的定语从句“that are members of the Federal Reserve System”说明了还有联邦储备银行之外的商业银行。D)(实施日常政策的是地方储备银行,而不是Board of Governors)与文中的“Because the board is not an operating agency,…left to the district Federal Reserve banks”相符。只有C)Board of Governors(是美国制订政策的最高权力者)与文章第二段首句内容不符,故C为选择答案。 39. 【详细解答】文章末尾部分的句子“Income…are not subject to the congressional appropriation process(收入… Part Ⅲ 41. 答案A。

The future society is bound to be a more competitive one, into which only those gifted in many ways can fit. Some other parents, however, do not think so. They are opposed to their children taking part in such courses. They think children are children just because they are in a stage of playing freely. These colourful remedial courses are nothing but a burden for them. Adults shouldn’t place additional burden on them; otherwise, their growth will be affected both mentally and physically. I am inclined to the former view. The young parents in China today have only one child. They can afford time and money to bring up and train their child, and most of them want to make their child a talented able person who will be able to contribute more to society in the future. Society in the future will need able persons of high quality. But those parents should remember two points according to me: dont force your child to do what he or she has no interest in; don’t let your child “eat” too much that he or she is not able to digest. |
