Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

In one very long sentence, the introduction to the U.N. Chapter expresses the ideals and the common aims of all the peoples whose governments joined together to

form the U.N.

“ We the peoples of the U.N. determined to save succeeding generations from the

scourge of war, which twice in our life time has brought untold suffering to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be mentioned, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom, and for these ends, to practise tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors, and to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and to employ international machinery for the promotion of economic and social advancement of all peoples, have resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims.”

The name “United Nations” is accredited to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the first group of representatives of member states met and signed a declaration of common intent on New Year's Day in 1942. Representatives of five powers worked together to draw up proposals, completed at Dumbarton Oaks in 1944. These proposals, modified after deliberation at the conference of International Organization in San Francisco which began in April 1945, were finally agreed on and signed as the U.N. Charter by 50 countries on 26 June 1945. Poland, not represented at the conference, signed the Charter later and was added to the list of original members. It was not until that autumn, however, after the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the U.S.S.R., the U.K. and the U.S. and by a majority of the other participants that U.N. officially came into existence. The date was 24 October, now universally celebrated as United Nations' Day.

The essential functions of the U.N. are to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to cooperate internationally

in solving international economic, social, cultural and human problems, promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and to be a centre for coo

rdinating the actions of nations in attaining these common ends.

No country takes precedence over another in the U.N.. Each member's rights and obligations are the same. All must contribute to peaceful settlement of international disputes, and members have pledged to refrain from the threat or use of force against other states. Though the U.N. has no right to intervene in any states internal affairs, it tries to ensure that nonmember states act according to its principles of international peace and security. U.N. member must offer every

assistance in an approved U.N. action and in no way assist states against which

the U.N. is taking preventive or enforcement action.

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

A hearing test that analyses brain waves for subconscious responses to sound has

recently been devised by a team of specialists at the University of Iowa. Instead of depending on the patient to indicate when he hears a laboratorycontrolled noise, as in the traditional form of testing, this new method, called electric response audiometry, enables audiologists to trace the noise's path directly from the ear to the brain while the patient relaxes or sleeps. Although brain responses have been used in other auditory tests for some time, the University of Iowa specialists are the only scientists to date who analyse simultaneously three components of hearing—the responses of the middle ear, the auditory nerve, and the brain stem. This information helps to identify the precise location of a hearing problem and, at the same time, to measure its severity. While electric response audiometry is not meant to replace conventional means of testing, it is specially effective in diagnosing hearing problems in very young children, multiply handicapped individuals, and psychologically disturbed persons because it does not require the patient's active participation.

26. According to the passage, electric response audiometry can be used ____

A) whether a person is awake or asleep

B) only if a person is relaxed

C) particularly if a person hears a loud noise

C) observe the reaction of the brain to a laboratorycontrolled noise

D) study all the parts of brainwave responses at the same time 

28. It can be inferred from the passage that electric response audiometry would be especially recommended for ____.

A) a threeyearold girl who has an earache

B) an old man who cups his ear to ear

C) a young child who does not talk

D) a rock musician who plays the drums 

29. The passage indicates that which of the following is the primary value of the University of Iowa hearing test?

A) It will reduce misdiagnoses of hardtotest patients.

B) It will lead to a cure for congenital deafness.

C) It will eventually make other means of testing hearing obsolete.

D) It will win Nobel Prize for outstanding achievement in the field of medi

cine. 

30. The paragraph following this one would most likely deal with ____

A) why some people can hear better than others

B) what can be done to help the hearing impaired

C) how this new auditory test is conducted

D) which hearing problems are the most severe 

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry or decimum. Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The decimum was the wife's right to receive a tenth of all her husband's property. The wife had the right to withhold consent, in all transactions the husband would make. And more than just a right: the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.The wife shared in the management of her husband's personal property, but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly able to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Mariá Vivas, a Catalan woman of Barcelona. Having agreed with her husband Miró to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miró's personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, “for the sake of peace”. Either through the dowry or through being hottempered, the Catalan wife knew how to win herself, within the context of the family, a powerful economic position.

31. A decimum was ____.

A) the wife's inheritance from her father

B) a gift of money to the new husband

C) a written contract

in marriage was ____.

A) higher than that of her husband

B) lower than that of her husband

C) the same as that of her husband

D) higher than that of a single woman 

33. What compensation did Mariá Vivas get for the field?

A) Some of the land Miró had inherited.

B) A tenth of Miró's land.

C) Money for household expenses.

D) Money from Miró's inheritance. 

34. Could a husband sell his wife's inheritance?

A) No, under no circumstances.

B) Yes, whenever he wished to.

C) Yes, if she agreed.

D) Yes, if his fatherinlaw agreed. 

35. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an effect of the dowry system?

B) The wife was protected from desertion.

C) The wife gained a powerful economic position.

D) The husband was given control over his wife's property. 

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

The brain is organised into different regions, each responsible for different functions, and in humans this organization is very marked. The largest parts of the brain are the cerebral hemispheres, which occupy most of the interior of the skull. They are layered structures, the most complex being the outer layer, known as the cerebral cortex(大脑皮层), where the nerve cells are extremely densely packed to allow great interconnectivity. Its function is not fully understood, but we can get some indication of its purpose from studies of animals that have had it removed. A dog, for example, can still move in a coordinated manner, will eat and sleep, and even bark if it is disturbed. However, it also becomes blind and loses its sense of smell—more significantly, perhaps, it loses all interest in its environment, not responding to people or to its name, nor to other dogs, even of the opposite sex. It also loses all ability to learn. In effect, it loses the characteristics that we generally refer to as indicating intelligenceawareness, interest and interaction with an environment, and an ability to adapt and learn. Thus the cerebral cortex seems to be the seat of the higher order functions of the brain, and the core of intelligence.The cerebral cortex has been the subject of investigation by researchers for many years, and is slowly revealing its secrets. It demonstrates a localization of functions, in that different areas of the cortex fulfill different functions, such as motion control, hearing, and vision. The visual part of the cortex is especially interesting. In the visual cortex, electrical stimulation of the cells can produce the sensation of light, and detailed analysis has shown that specific layers of neurons are sensitive to particular orientations of input stimuli, so that one layer responds maximally to horizontal lines, while another responds to vertical ones. Although much of this structure is genetically predetermined, the orientationspecific layout of the cells appears to be learnt at an early stage. Animals brought up in an

environment of purely horizontal lines do not develop neuron structures that respond to vertical orientations, showing that these structures are developed due to environmental input and not purely from genetic predetermination. This is calledselforganisation of the visual cortex since there is no external teacher to guide the development of these structures.

 15. 答案A。

 【关键词语】 disappearance of many ships and planes

 【详细解答】 如果听到短文中的关键词“ disappearance of many ships and planes…”,而disappearance意思为消失(lost),故而不难选出正确答案B。

 【详细解答】 首先必须听清“… western point is Florida, and its eastern point is the Coast of Africa…”,再根据地理常识便可知Bermuda处于大西洋,

London Tennis Tournament

我们听到“… has won the London Tennis Tournament”便可知正确答案是C。

 19. 答案A。

 【关键词语】 past, first time

(What is Mr.Cox looking forward to?)。

 【详细解答】 题目问的是联合国宗旨的首条内容是什么,文章第二段所阐述的均为联合国宗旨,首要一条是“ We the peoples of the U.N. determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our life time has brought untold suffering to mankind,…”(我们这些联合国的成员 决心将我们的后代从战争的灾难中解救出来,在我们的一生中,这样的战争已经两次给人类带来了数不尽的痛苦。)

be used, save in the common interest, …”(在一般利害关系中不应使用武力)。A项never to use arms(永不使用武力)与此不符,B项to employ international machines(使用国际机器)又不同于“…and to enjoy international machinery for the promotion of economic and social advancement of all people,…”(享受用于促进全人类的经济和社会进步的国际机构),并非任何机构都可享受,使用。 C项to better standards of life(提高生活水平)也不准确。文中“…and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,…”

 25. 答案A。

has no right to intervene in any state's internal affairs,…”(联合国无权干涉任何一个国家的内部事务)。

 26. 答案A。

 【详细解答】 文章中“… this new method, called electric response audiometry, enables audiologists to trace the noise's path directly from the ear to the brain

while the patient relaxes or sleeps.”

 【详细解答】 本题所问是关于文章细节的问题,虽然文中没有直接回答,但是通过“… the University of Iowa specialists are the only scientists to date who analyse simultaneously three components of hearing…”(衣阿华大学的专家们是绝无仅有的同时分析听力三个部分的科学家)中的“only”(仅仅,唯一),“analyse”(分析),“simultaneously”(同时地)和“three components of hearing”(听力三个部分)可以判断出D)为正确答案。

 【详细解答】 文章最后点明了“… it is specially effective in diagnosing hearing

problems in very young children, multiply handicapped individuals, and psychologically disturbed persons…”其中it指代的是electric response audiometry(电子反应测听技术)。

 29. 答案A。

This information helps to identify the precise location of a hearing problem and, at the same time,

 【详细解答】 文章第一段明确说明了“ the decimum was the wife's right to receive

a tenth of all her husband's property.”decimum是指妻子享有接受其丈夫全部财产的十分之一的权力。

 33. 答案A。

None being offered, she

succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miró's personal inheritance.”Mariá Vivas

Having agreed

with her husband Miró to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation.”

The wife had the right to withhold consent in all

transactions the husband would make. And more than just a right: the documents

show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband”证

of this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, …”

Either through the dowry or through being hottempered, the Catalan wife knew how to win herself, within the context of the family, a powerful economic

The brain is orga

nised into different regions, each responsible for different functions, and in humans this organization is very marked.”

Its function is not fully understood, but we

can get some indication of its purpose from studies of animals that have had it

removed.”这里its function指的就是the cerebral cortex's function。

seat本意是指sth. used or made for sitting

on, e.g. a chair, box, bench, the floor.

Thus the cerebral cortex seems to be the seat of the hig

her order functions of the brain, and the core of intelligence.”

适,第一段中间“ They are layered structures, the most complex being the outer layer, known as the cerebral cortex, where the nerve cells are extremely densely packed to allow great interconnecticity.

 39. 答案A。

The visual part of the cortex is especially

interesting.…and detailed analysis has shown that specific layers of neurons a

re sensitive to particular orientations of input stimuli,…”

Part Ⅳ

The strategic partnership that China and U.S. spent most of the past decade fashioning has given away with the visit to Beijing of Secretary of State George Shultz to the realization that the two countries are simply not natural allies.

Each perceives the Soviet Union as threatening its security, but in such different ways and for such different reasons that efforts to develop a projected “alliance of interests” have failed.

Before his departure, Mr. Shultz rejected the idea of ChineseAmerican relations based primarily on strategic considerations, although this was, undeniably, the American motive from President Richard Nixon's opening to China in 1972 to President Jimmy Carter's establishment of full diplomatic relations on Jan. 1, 1979.

But the strategic cooperation both countries envisaged, particularly in light of the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia and Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, never materialized.

Washington would like good relations with Beijing, which has become a major U.S. trading partner in the past four years, but is resigned to the fact that normal relations are all there can be.

Value Time, Value Life

As an old saying goes, “An inch of time equals an inch of gold. Gold can be

regained if it is gone, but time will never return when it passed.” Perhaps time is unlimited in some degree, but man's life is limited. So time at man's disposal is extremely limited. Thus it comes to the point that man must value his time. To value his time means to value his life.

How to value our time? Some suggest that we make full use of our time to do good

things for the people and the whole society. Being young men, we should not relax our efforts to engage in our studies. Loose no time in the study of all professions required so as to dedicate ourselves to the realization of the four modernizations. As Comrade Lei Feng says, “Plunge my limited life into the unlimited service of the people”.

But it is a great pity that there are more than a few young men who are not aware of the value of time. They spend their treasure time in drinking, dancing, idling, gambling and even taking addictive drugs. They don't realize that they are killing part of their valuable life.

To value our time we should first of all develop a good habit of saving time. Never leave today's work for tomorrow. Get rid of laziness and establish a correct

view point of life. Arrange our time scientifically. “ Work while you work, play while you play. ” That will make your time and life happy and gay
